Duncan is a director and founder of Mackenzie Investment Strategies Ltd.
For 30 years he has grown a valued client base, delivering financial planning based on Trust. From University, Duncan started his career in private client stockbroking in Glasgow, but many clients will know him from his time with a regional accountancy firm, where he managed a team of IFA’s throughout Scotland.
With a desire to deliver a personal financial planning service to a small number of clients, he took what was a bold step at the time, to set up his own company. Many of his clients followed him and the company has now grown to what you see today.
Duncan is a Chartered Financial Planner and holds the highest qualification as a Fellow of the Personal Finance Society.
Duncan and Avril have managed to keep a good work/life balance over the years, with many clients following the progress and development of the family. He is delighted that his eldest daughter Jill has now joined the family firm from University, and is bracing himself for the day that Kim too decides to follow!
Born in Inverness, Chris moved to the Isle of Lewis at an early age before returning to Inverness aged 9. Upon completing 6th year at Millburn Academy, Chris went to study at Napier University obtaining an Honours Degree in Marketing Management and Entrepreneurship. Following Graduation in 2003 he took the opportunity to travel for a year through South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and much of South East Asia before taking up employment with the Royal Bank of Scotland. Starting as a Teller Chris quickly worked up to the Position of Financial Planning Manager before deciding better opportunities lay elsewhere, deciding to leave the bank and embark on 9 months self study to achieve his Diploma in Financial Planning, culminating in his joining of Mackenzie Investment Strategies in February of 2014.
Chris is currently working towards his Chartered Qualification which he will be juggling with the arrival of his first Child in January 2018. Hobbies include getting his house baby ready and trying to cram as much sleep in before baby’s arrival.
Daniel joined MISL in May 2013 initially coming in as an admin assistant/receptionist. Daniel is a real success story within Mackenzie Investment, working his way through the Administration team, into Paraplanning and is now a fully qualified Financial Planner having achieved the Diploma in Financial Advice. Daniel has previously worked in the Public Sector and in IT, however has now found his calling in Financial Services. He is now working towards achieving Chartered Status in line with the company’s goals of having all planners Chartered.
Outside of work Daniel enjoys staying fit through the gym, football and golf as well as keeping up with his busy social calendar.
Jake joined Mackenzie Investment Strategies as a Trainee Financial Planner at the Inverness office in February 2017.
Having previously completed an Apprenticeship in Civil Engineering, Jake felt his future career aspirations and skills lay more suited to the Financial Sector and was delighted to join Mackenzie Investment Strategies. Jake has already achieved his Certificate in Financial Administration and is now working towards his diploma in Financial Advice.
Away from work, Jake enjoys keeping active through going to the gym, kickboxing and football as well as spending time with friends.
Fiona is a senior administrator with Mackenzie Investment Strategies Ltd and has gained her level 3 Certificate in Financial Service.
Having been working with Duncan since 2007, Fiona previously worked for Geddes & Associates in Nairn, Scottish Amicable Investment Services in Glasgow and Guernsey International Fund Managers in Guernsey.
As part of a close knit team, Fiona and Jennifer, the Moray Office Manager, work together to ensure that both offices run smoothly and to provide administrative support to the Planing Team.
Fiona is originally from Nairn and loves being back home, to enjoy life with family, friends and chocolate lab Monte.
Jill is currently in her final year studying Management at Robert Gordon’s University in Aberdeen. Jill is Duncan’s eldest daughter and has worked in the company over the last few years before she took up a year placement with Mackenzie Investment in May 2016 as part of her third year at University. She is looking forward to returning to work with us when she graduates in July 2018.
Between Aberdeen and Inverness Jill enjoys socialising with friends and walking her dog.
Lauren joined Mackenzie Investment Strategies’ Inverness Office in September 2015 as an Administrator, having previously worked for the Bank of Scotland.
Lauren is enjoying her role within the team and has now decided to start studying towards her Financial Services Qualifications.
Having moved from Caithness a few years ago, Lauren is enjoying the busier lifestyle in Inverness. Working part time, she particularly enjoys coffee dates with the girls and running around after her wee boy.
Charlotte joined Mackenzie Investment Strategies in July 2016 as an administrator, shortly after she took on the role as trainee paraplanner. Having previously worked as a Personal Banking Manager for TSB for the previous 4 years, she felt that her career was strong footed within the financial sector but wanted a new challenge within financial planning.
As an administrator and trainee paraplanner, her role is to provide administration support and to work closely with the planning team to help write reports. She is working towards her exams with the CII for Financial Planning with the aim of becoming a financial planner.
Having moved to Nairn, she has is enjoying the freedom that comes with having her own place, cooking and spending time with friends and family.
Fiona B joined the team in November 2017 as a part-time Receptionist at the Inverness office.
Fiona has worked in various roles in the office environment with the Clydesdale Bank and LifeScan Scotland.
In her spare time Fiona is a keen golfer and enjoys the outdoors.
Lucia is the newest recruit to Mackenzie Investment Strategies, having joined in March 2018.
Having begun studying Law at Glasgow University, she decided a legal career was not for her and has now taken on the role as Receptionist/Admin Assistant.
In her spare time Lucia enjoys staying active, meeting with friends and long walks with her dog.
Avril is a director and founder of Mackenzie Investment Strategies Ltd.
The most important aspect of our firm is our clients. With this in mind, Avril has been given an independent role to ensure that all client communication and contact is delivered accurately, in a timely manner, consistent with the company’s financial planning process, and is of the highest quality.
After graduating from Glasgow University, Avril was a researcher with the BBC. She then went on to develop a successful career as a primary teacher. Her attention to detail and ability to question all of the team, provides her with the skills to clearly communicate with clients in plain English about subjects that clients are often confused about.
Jennifer joined us in March 2015, having worked with Johnston Carmichael Wealth for the previous 22 years, where she gained the Certificate in Financial Administration (Life and Pension) and the Financial Planning Certificate, as it was previously known.
Jennifer has worked in various administration roles throughout her career in Financial Services. Currently, as Moray Office Manager, she provides administrative support to the Planning Team and ensures that the Elgin office runs smoothly.
Jennifer and her husband were brought up in the Keith area, however, moved to Miltonduff, near Elgin a number of years ago.
Away from work, Jennifer enjoys walking with her 2 labradors and spending time with her grandchildren, family and friends.
Grant joined MISL in September 2015, where he was unconvinced that there could be a long term role for him within the company but Duncan’s faith was proved right as he is still around. Grant’s primary role still remains around business development although he is happy to help out in other areas when required. As such it is an interesting and varied role for Grant.
Outside the office, Grant loves cooking, hill walking and listening to all forms of music.
Kaz joined Mackenzie Investment Strategies’ Elgin office in October 2016, having worked with Johnston Carmichael Wealth for 9 years previously.
As an Administrator, her role is to provide administrative support to our Planning team. From the initial gathering of policy information right through to completion of business, our Administrators aim is to ensure that we provide a first class service to our clients.
Working part time, she has great fun on her days off with her two children and catching up with friends. Kaz and her husband enjoy live music and going to concerts when they can.
Debbie joined the team in November 2017, with 10 years experience in Financial Services – having achieved her Certificate in Financial Administration (Life and Pension), Debbie is currently working towards her Diploma in Financial Planning.
Debbie has worked in various roles over the years with Johnston Carmichael Wealth and Acumen Financial Planning Ltd, Debbie loves her current position in the planning team – supporting the planners in client meetings, through the research stage to preparing reports.
Away from work Debbie enjoys an active lifestyle on the moray coast, her favourite running circuit is along the old railway track from Hopeman to Burghead. Debbie also enjoys trips abroad, especially when they involve visiting friends and family in Spain, Turkey and Australia.
Recognising that personal service is the foundation of our success and bearing in mind that building the business would need to retain this foundation, Duncan set about assembling a team that works collectively on all cases – delivering chartered financial planning at the very highest level.
